Does Car AC Use Gas?

Does a car AC use gas? Does an AC burn car gas? We have an answer to both of those questions! Many Boca Raton and Delray Beach drivers wonder “Does AC burn car gas?” so that’s why our service center team is here to give you all the information you need to know!

Your conditioning system requires gas to operate, assuming you’re driving a gas-powered car. The alternator, which draws its power from the engine, powers the AC and everyone knows you need gas for your engine to run. Take a look at our guide below to learn more about:

  • Does air conditioning in the car use gas?

  • Tips for improving fuel efficiency

How Does Car AC Work?

If you’re wondering, “Does air conditioning in the car use gas?” then you should first understand how AC works. Your vehicle’s AC system works the same across all brands, no matter the OEM. That said, AC runs on refrigerant, which is a high-pressure gas, and the AC system is comprised of multiple components, including:

  • Compressor: compresses the refrigerant into a fluid, allowing flow down a line to the condenser.
  • Condenser: eliminates the heat from the refrigerant and moves it to the expansion valve or orifice tube.
  • Expansion valve or orifice tube: changes the refrigerant back to its gaseous state, then transfers the gas to the receiver/drier or accumulator.
  • Receiver/drier or accumulator: removes moisture from the refrigerant and sends it to the evaporator.
  • Evaporator: takes the heat out of the air passing through its core, then sends it into the refrigerant, which results in cold air flowing beyond the evaporator.

Can Using Car AC Be Fuel-Efficient?

Now that you know the answer to, “Does AC burn car gas?”, we’re sure you want to know how you can be most efficient using your AC in Boca Raton. When driving on the highway, for example, using your car’s AC is actually more efficient than opening the windows. This is due to aerodynamics and the power needed to propel your vehicle. Simply put, having your windows down increases drag and makes your vehicle work harder, therefore using up more gas.

Other Tips for Improving Fuel Efficiency

Luckily for our West Palm Beach drivers, there are other ways you can give your car’s fuel economy a little boost as well, which include:

  • Brake gradually
  • Keep the tires properly inflated and aligned
  • Avoid idling for over 30 seconds
  • Don’t overload your car
  • Use sun reflectors if you’re parked in the sun
  • Buy the recommended oil for your car
  • Reduce your speed and drive in a higher gear
